Okay, so one of my favorite memories of the year...Marko wanted to spontaneously go fishing last week on a beautiful Fall day, and so I rescheduled my apppointments and waited for him to dash home after a few things at work. Unfortunately, he was a little later than expected, and a road crew pulled into our circle to resurface the road. (They had informed us that once they started, no one was to drive on the road for 3 to 4 hours following.) Marko was devastated. The little fishing boat was in the garage, and the circle was blocked. I told him it was no big deal and we would go another time. (Right.) So next thing I saw was Mark on the ATV with the snowplow on the front, and the boat on the back, going across our lawn, then the nieghbors lawn. He couldn't get out of the circle without detroying the neighbor's garden, so he basically did the Tienneman Square routine in front of the giant machine that was about to come up the main road, and gave that pleading look to the construction guys, and so of course, they got off the truck and allowed us (and even helped) to pull the boat over the corner. We then pulled the boat down the street to where the car was parked and hooked her up. Back and forth to the house until we were all supplied, and off we went. I wish I had a video--or at least a photo--but htis will have to do. That man is one in a milllion. I love his guts! We're eating trout tonight.

This month I had the exciting opportunity to travel to London to spend Sarah's last week with her while she attended BYU London. We had a great few...no...ten days together, extended by the Icelandic volcano. Here's the story:

The day the volcano started erupting, we heard on the subway that there were some delays at the Heathrow airport. We figured it was no big deal and things would clear up and be fine by the next day when I was supposed to leave. Not so. Things continued to get worse on Friday and Saturday. My flight was cancelled. Everyone's flight was cancelled. All the students at the BYU Center had the same problem. Fortunately, BYU allowed the students to stay free of charge, and my hotel allowed me to stay (at full charge of course) until we could get out.

By Saturday, we had checked as many sources as possible regarding the probable length of the eruption, and made the decision to head south toward Rome, as that was the only airport in Europe that seemed to be operating steadily. Sarah was headed there anyway in order to spend a week with David, so we started working on tickets. The only tickets available to exit London were for Tuesday morning on the Chunnel. Mark had my flight changed to Wednesday morning out of Rome. If all trains had been available and running, that would have been a possibility, but the sleeper train tickets were booked for at least a week, as well as any other train into Italy that we could find online. After attending the Hyde Park ward on Sunday morning, we decided to just get going and take our chances. We prepared to leave at 5am on Monday and go to the train station with hopes of getting on an earlier train, as we knew our chances of getting to Rome by Wednesday were slim if we left Tuesday. We were carrying all our luggage, including Sarah’s four months worth, and an extra suitcase I had prepared for Sarah to take to our Grandchildren in Rome. (Originally, I was going to take her luggage home with me from England). That gave us five heavy pieces to get through Europe.

After some waiting and doubtful moments, we had a stroke of luck and the attendant released some seats on the early train to Brussels, our first destination, and we were off at 6am from King’s Cross Station toward Belgium. From there, we weren’t sure. But there was apparently a rail strike in France, so we thought we were going to have to skirt around through Germany and Switzerland into Italy. The internet was almost no help, as it was jammed by everyone in Europe trying to do the same thing we were.

I made a decision early on to talk to as many people as I could along the journey in order to get information. The train manager was a great help, and came to us as we approached Lille, France and strongly encouraged us to exit the train there and go to Paris. She had written out several itineraries we might try. We were amazed by the time she had spent for us personally, and thought it best to trust her judgment, even though it seemed crazy!

Unable to get on the first train she recommended, (US credit cards don’t work in European train kiosk machines, so every station required a long wait in line), we departed for Paris at about noon, and arrived there about 2pm, to encounter huge chaos. The line to buy tickets stretched way down the corridor, and there were confused, tired travelers crowding through the station at every angle, hefting luggage and babies and brief cases, trying to communicate in all languages and get information wherever they could. We stood in line for about two hours before finally coming to a ticket window. We prayed to get someone who would give us good help. Sometimes, the answer is “not now”. Our rather inattentive, cell phone answering, disinterested ticket salesgirl informed us that the only options we had were Geneva Switzerland and a small town in southern France called Chambery. There were no trains beyond either of those points to her knowledge, or that of her computer. We asked her if Chambery was safe. She shrugged and checked her cell phone, waiting for us to make a decision.

We decided on Chambery, as it was closer to Rome, and off we went carrying five pieces of luggage up and down stairs to subways that were closed off and on due to the strike, toward the train station on the other side of Paris. Sarah was a lifesaver at that point, as she had been in town a few months earlier and knew a few of the subway ropes. I was near panic. We both felt that we could not get out of Paris fast enough.

On arrival in Chambery late in the evening, we spoke with someone on the train who had tickets to the next town, Modane. We wanted to get as far south as possible, so even though Chambery looked safe and pleasant, we attempted to buy tickets to go one more stop. Again, the machines would not accept our card and asked for 40 Euros in COINS in order to buy our tickets, with the train departing in ten minutes at another stair ridden platform. I ran to an ATM, got bills, and started running form store to store outside the station, convincing each to give me as much change as possible. Still short with five minutes to get to the train, I ran into the train gift shop and said, “Does anyone have change? Please?” An Italian fellow grabbed his wallet and showed me everything he had while asking “What do you need?” I told him we needed to get on the train and that the machine only took coins. “Just get on the train”, he said emphatically. “Buy your ticket on the train. GO!”

I ran and found Sarah and our bags (cursed things) and ran to the stairs once again, down, up, toward the train. When we reached the last stair to the platform sweaty and dazed, there was the Italian again. “What are you trying to do?”

“We are trying to get to Rome by tomorrow” I said. “Let me see if I can help you”. He turned away, and we entered the train and sat down, exhausted and unsure of the next step.

After a few minutes, the Italian appeared again, and said we were invited to spend the night at his home in Torino Italy, including a ride there and help getting on a train to Rome in the morning. He asked us to consider it, but said there was no pressure, and that all he could offer was a couch as another friend was using the spare bedroom. He headed back to his first class cabin, and we looked at each other, ready to make another decision. Sarah wasn’t so sure, which I was glad of, thinking of a young woman making that decision. But as an old woman, who had just been helped by that same stranger in the station, I felt good about this guy, and his generous gesture. After some more discussion, we accepted his offer, and met up with him in the tiny, dark station upon arrival in Modane, France.

He had arranged for his father to drive over the border to pick him and his business partner up, and now added us… and all our luggage! While we were waiting for him to arrive, we got talking and learned he was an osteopath, and his friend a Physical Therapist from San Diego. They had been teaching together in Amsterdam, and were stranded there as well. We just happened to meet up in this tiny French town. We called him the Good Samaritan.

His father, Dimitrio arrived, and we fit snuggly into the car and drove an hour and a half in the dark through the mountains to Torino. On the way, he was on the phone with his mother, and formulated a new plan. We were to stay with his parents in their home. At this point we were so tired we were up for anything, although we felt like we were really imposing. He also insisted that we all have dinner, and that his father was an excellent cook. Mind you, it was midnight. But what do you say to an insistent Italian?

We arrived at the lovely Italian home of Mirella and Dimitrio Gandino at about midnight, were escorted to a nice bedroom to freshen up while they made dinner (at midnight!), and then went into the living room where Eric, the good Samaritan, was checking train schedules for us. We were overwhelmed by their kindness. After delicious pasta, bread, and salad, we crashed for five hours and woke to find Mirella and Dimitrio waiting at the car with our luggage. They drove us to the station, walked us into the ticket office, kissed our cheeks and said goodbye. Saints among us.

We were off to Rome on a high speed train that no internet, ticket salesgirl, or kiosk seemed to think existed, where we spent a delightful day with Sarah and Clint and the boys, catching a flight the next morning back home.

Dear Family,Is it that as I get older, I realize how blessed my life in this family is, or is it that this family becomes more and more of a blessing as it continues? Don't know for sure, but I do know that I feel BLESSED! And as we enter into my favorite time of year, I love to recognize and ponder on those blessings, most of which include y'all. (How's that, Ann?)

Sarah and Clint (Whiting) just celebrated the birth of their second son, Abraham. He looks just like his still adorable brother Zachary, and we are so enjoying both of them. Clint works at "This is the Place" State Park, and Sarah, having earned her degree in Modern Dance at the U last Spring, now stays home with the boys. The have produced a terrific garden this year, and Clint continues to paint. He has done some beautiful pieces of the pioneer buildings at the park, which were displayed in the Sandy City library.

Jake has finished all his class work at the U, and is working for a commercial real estate company as an "agent in training". They love him. We often joke that Jake could sell absolutely anything. He has started doing triathalons, and has been very successful, training consistently and getting great times. He drives a Harley, still lives in Sugarhouse, and knows how to get out and enjoy life! He will compete in a triathalon this weekend at Lake Powell.

Ann has made the big move to Houston, just a few weeks before hurricane Ike. She survived THAT excitement, and has had good things happening in school--the most recent of which was a real live professional contract at the Houston Grand Opera! She only has to sing off stage for a few minutes for a few weeks, and it will cover three months rent! One of those tender mercies we were all praying for, as she wasn't really sure how she was going to pay her rent through the school year because they keep them so busy! Jared continues to live in San Francisco and works at a health club there. As soon as we get any news, we'll pass it on :)

James had a fantastic summer working for Western Rivers. He loves BYU, and recently changed his major to business, so now he will get to stay there a little longer! Part of the inspiration for the change was his recent experience starting a recycling business of his own named "One Man's Trash". He made the top eight finalists for Entrepeneur of the Year at BYU, and has a great experience learning from former BYU graduates through the competition. He builds radios for Marshall Radio, dates cute girls, and keeps busy. He took a bunch of friends down Westwater Canyon this weekend--including a few Zoobie cousins. He said it was an "epic adventure".

Sarah is at Weber State, getting used to college life, and partying plenty, as you can probably tell if you visit her Facebook or Youtube. She plays in the marching band (much to her dismay--HATES that uniform!) She is also playing in a great flute quintet, and in the Symphonic band that will travel to New York this Spring. She adores playing her flute, but is determined to find another major. She continues to light up whatever space she enters. We miss that at home.

Isaac started 5am morning practices again this morning (as Mom patiently awaits his desire to get his license), so we don't see him for twelve hours most days. He comes home, eats, does homework, and falls into bed. It's a strenuous schedule for a growing boy, but he is determined to have a great swim year this year. Some of his best friends are James and Amy Warner's children. How 'bout that? They just found eachother in the big wide world of school. Didn't even know they were related.

Mark is busy as ever with business, just returned from the Philippines and Thailand where he is trying to recruit more therapists, and loves to ride his new Yamaha bike when he can. He is an amazing husband and friend. I am a lucky woman. Just call me lucky. We have both been spending a lot of time at the hospital with his Mom, who has been critically ill for two weeks.

I had the summer of summers. I got to go to Scandinavia with Ann. I hiked Spry Canyon, the Narrows, the Subway, the Columbia River Gorge, the fjords, and many various Wasatch peaks. I love the mountains. And I am so grateful my body will still take me there. I am busy with Young Womens, and regular family life. I still do a few massages, and I love that too.

We had a wonderful family trip to Canada in August which coincided with Vic and Jeanna and family. What luck! Pat and Scott are amazing hosts, amazing people. As are all of you. For photos and occasional updates, go to:www.theandersonmarshallfamily.blogspot.com

We visited many friends and associates Ann made on her mission to Sweden, also traveled to Norway to see and hike in the fjords--a lifelong dream of Georgia's, and took a sleeper ferry to Helsinki, Finland for a day. Dear Family, April 3, 2008 Happy Easter! We are so grateful to celebrate another Spring, the season of new beginnings and fresh starts, the season to remember the life and sacrifice of our Savior Jesus Christ. There have been many changes in our already new family this year, with person facing new challenges, new opportunities for growth, new adventures. It is exciting to watch each child face these things head on, and progress forward.

We have seen Sarah and Clint finishing school at the U, and growing their family, all at the same time-a huge accomplishment combined with deep commitment. We love seeing Clint progress in his artistic endeavors, and Sarah dancing "with baby" (due in August!), involving family members in her journey musically and artistically. There is nothing quite so gratifying as seeing the love and tenderness with which they parent Zachary.

Jake has weathered a very tough storm with class and dignity, is working and learning in a sales and marketing career-well on his way. Instead of bitterness, we see progress and action…a true example of how the Savior's atonement can work in our lives. He is truly taking the high road. We have also loved seeing Jake operate this year as captain of the nationally ranked (3rd!) U of U Rugby team. He has earned great respect from his teammates.

Ann returned from a successful mission to Sweden, and looks forward now to graduate school in Houston. Having her around the house to sing and laugh with us again after 6 years away has been great. It is entertaining to see the schools courting that gorgeous voice, but even more a thrill to see the spiritual and personal growth that serving in the Gospel has given her. She is full of charity and goodness, and is a great teacher to all of us.

Jared took off this year to the big city San Francisco, and has faced challenges and struggles there, but continues to test the water on his own. He has been relentless in his pursuit of independence, which has to be admired all by itself. He just ran a "stair marathon", running all the stairs in the Bank of America Tower in just over twelve minutes! We wait to hear the next adventure Jared will dive into-he keeps us wondering!

James has gradually reacclimatized from serving in the Philippines, where we saw the difference he made in the lives of so many. He works extremely hard in school, and has created a great social life at BYU with friends and family, and continues with Folk Dancers. We are excited for him to take a summer job as a river rat with Western Rivers in Moab. Gosh--another trip we are just going to HAVE to take!

Sarah is a busy Senior, dancing and singing and playing her flute through the last few months of High School. When Sarah is around, we know we will laugh and be happy. She is extremely dedicated to her crafts and her school, where she spends most of her time. She has achieved a beautiful level of flute playing, which has earned her tuition for college at Weber State, as well as many friends.

Isaac, lamenting the fact that he will be a lone child in the house next year, is attempting to spend so much time at the pool that he will not realize he is alone. A dedicated swimmer and friend, Isaac has shown growth and maturity this year as he took on college level classes, high level swim meets, and many women, who wait patiently for his sixteenth birthday. To top all that off, he will work as a lifeguard at Cottonwood Heights this summer.

Mark is busy with work, loves lobbying in DC, serving on the Board of Trustees of APTA, along with many other positions and committees. He still likes to cook on Sundays, go to Bear Lake as often as possible, and find time to ski and motorcycle. Georgia continues to diet and exercise.
